Camel Gobi

Camel Trekking South Gobi

Focus: Camel riding

Duration: 8 days

Season: May – September

An early American Explorer wrote: “The romance of the desert will be destroyed. Tourists will sit in cars, eating western food, reading glossy magazines and having no idea about the glorious history, the tragedy and the romance of the Gobi trails”.  This will certainly not be true for you!  Travelling through one of the most diverse arid landscapes at a camels pace will leave unforgettable impressions and encounters.

After flying to Dalanzadgad, the capital of South Gobi Province you will visit the spectacular Eagle Canyon, which boasts Waterfalls that stay frozen all year round. After spending the night in a comfortable Ger-Camp you drive to Havtsgait from where you will start your camel-trek the next morning. An accompanying car will transport tents, food and your luggage and each three people will have the assistance of an experienced camel-herder.

This trip is a journey back in time, when caravans roamed the Gobi and camels were the only means of transport in the desert. The first day takes you through an impressive gorge into the vast steppe. During the second day you will see immense herds of gazelle roaming the steppes. If you’re lucky you might even spot a Kulan, the rare wild ass. One of the sights you will never forget is the desert-sky at night, when stars seem so close that you’re tempted to reach out for them. The last day of the camel-trek takes you through the gigantic sand dunes of Hongoryn Els, with the extraordinary length of 180km, to the shores of Lake Adag Nuur. The lake is rich in bird life and you will see ducks, different wading birds and cranes.

After a morning rest at the lakeshore you will drive through an impressive landscape and the desolate Ongiin Plateau towards Middle Gobi, where you will arrive the next afternoon. On the way you visit the monastery of Erdenedalai. The last day’s drive brings you past the sacred mountain Zorgol Hairkhan back to the capital.
